Do it Better Project
For our last STEM project, we had to revise one of our previous projects and make it better. We decided to recreate a physics of sports video. Our group decided to do the physics of a catching a butterfly. Then, we decided what videos we wanted to portray this. Once we figured out the layout of the film, we calculated the physics of catching a butterfly. We calculated how much force could be exerted on the butterfly before it was injured or killed, and the speed one must walk to catch a butterfly. We also talked about the physics of a butterfly’s flight. We then recorded voice overs, and one group member synced them on to the videos and we edited the videos, and published the product to YouTube.
Concepts
Velocity: the speed of something in a given direction. The equation to find velocity is V=D/T. We found my velocity of my creeping up on the butterfly, which was 0.388 meters per sec.
Circumference: the distance around something. The equation to find it is C=3.14r. We used the circumference to find the distance Rachel's arm went to catch the butterfly. The distance Rachel's arm moved was 4.41 meters.
Force: the push or pull on an object because of change in motion. Its units in measure are N, and for our video we calculated it in the equation force times time of net touching the butterfly= mass of butterfly times velocity of net. After putting all the calculations in except the F in the equation, you get the force of 0.004 N.
Mass: Amount of matter in an object. It is measured usually in kilograms and pounds. We found the mass researching. In our film the mass is 0.0005kg.
Time: a progress of events. It is calculates usually by seconds and hours. For time, we used my velocity when walking, my speed was 0.35 s.
Distance: the amount of space between two points. It is usually calculated in meters and miles. We used it in many other equations, to also solve for them. We found this by using a measuring stick, from the starting point to the ending point.

Reflection
Doing the project for a second time was easier. We used skills collected throughout the year to complete it. There were some rough patches. We had a smaller time bracket, as well as the stress of finals. We eventually ran out of time so one of our group members completed it at home. The small time bracket also leads to the awful sound quality. There were also up sides to this project. We covered all our steps, calculations, and we made it somewhat enjoyable to watch. For example, we added a funny video of Connor getting hit in the head with the net, and applied it to the video. Also we worked well in a group. We split the work evenly, and enjoyed each other’s company.
The skills I learned were if I want something completed I should probably do it myself. I am a perfectionist, so if something isn't the way I want I get stressed out. I learned that a project can be fun if you treat it that way. I also learned some more editing and computer skills. I learned how to record voice overs and add it to our videos.
The one thing I need to work on is leadership. I have always struggled in this category because I do not want to be viewed as bossy or mean. I needed to work on taking control of my group as well as speaking up about good ideas.
Overall I had fun this year and I'm going to miss this class.
